PUDDLETOWN SURGERY | FRIENDS OF THE PRACTICE
By listening and caring we do the small things that make a big difference in helping people to improve their health and quality of life. We work with committed volunteers to complement our health care services to be an integral part of the patient's journey towards sustained well-being.
What do we do?
- Visiting & befriending elderly and vulnerable adults to provide company. This helps to prevent social isolation and related conditions.
- Accompanied walks or trips out.
- Taking people on wheelchair walks.
- Dog walking.
- Help with correspondence.
- Reading.
- Playing board/card games etc.
How the scheme works?
- Patients wanting help through the Scheme are referred by doctors and nurses at the surgery. We also are able to receive referrals directly from patients, their relatives / friends and other support organisations.
- The Coordinator will visit the patient at home to discuss their referral and the type of help available.
- If the referral is an appropriate one, the Coordinator will endeavour to find a suitable volunteer and arrange an appointment with the patient to introduce the volunteer.
- The Coordinator will remain available to deal with queries and comments from volunteers and patients alike.
How can you help?
In whichever way you can. You can give as much or as little time as you like and choose the service which most appeals to you. There is no upper age limit for volunteers. There are no hard and fast rules but the most important thing is that, if you are visiting a patient, your visits should be regular and reliable.
Everyone Benefits
- Patients and their carers benefit from practical help and social contact.
- The GP Practice benefits from being able to offer extra help and support to patients when professional help is not what they really need.
- Volunteers benefit from the satisfaction of taking part in rewarding and useful work.
- The Community benefits from an extended care service.
